Hoy 28 de julio se celebra el Día Mundial contra la Hepatitis en conmemoración del natalicio del científico estadounidense Baruch Samuel Blumberg, descubridor del virus de la hepatitis B y creador de la vacuna contra esa enfermedad del hígado.
Blumberg recibió el premio Nobel de Medicina de 1976 por sus hallazgos sobre «el origen y diseminación de las enfermedades infecciosas».
La #FundaciónHuéspued informó sobre datos imprescindibles sobre esta inflamación del hígado que, en la mayoría de los casos, es producida por un virus. También puede producirse por el consumo excesivo de alcohol o por algunas toxinas, medicamentos o determinadas afecciones médicas.
En general, las hepatitis no producen síntomas. Por lo tanto, sólo se las puede diagnosticar mediante análisis de sangre. Existen varios tipos de hepatitis virales, de acuerdo al tipo de virus con el que la persona se infecte. Los más comunes son hepatitis A, hepatitis B y hepatitis C.
Las hepatitis A y B cuentan con vacuna, incluidas en el Calendario Nacional de Vacunación. Para la hepatitis C, sin embargo, no existe vacuna. La forma de prevenirla es evitando compartir agujas, jeringas o elementos cortopunzantes con otras personas, utilizando materiales descartables o esterilizados al realizar tatuajes, piercings o implantes y con el uso del preservativo en las relaciones sexuales.
